What is Swiss Machining?

Swiss machining is a material-removal process that uses advanced CNC-controlled sliding-head lathes to perform cutting operations along and perpendicular to the workpiece axis.

Unlike traditional setups where much of the bar stock is exposed, Swiss-type machines use a guide bushing that exposes only the section being machined. This minimal stick-out drastically reduces vibration and deflection, enabling simultaneous machining processes with higher stability and superior precision.

Due to this efficiency, Swiss-type machining is the premier fabrication method for complex, small-diameter components in automotive, medical, and aerospace industries.

Swiss Machining Process

Benefits of Swiss Machining

Swiss machining offers unique advantages for precision small-diameter components

High Precision & Tight Tolerances

Guide bushing supports the workpiece near the cutting tool, minimizing deflection and vibration. Routinely achieves tolerances as tight as ±0.001" or better.

Complex Geometries

Perform cutting operations both axially and perpendicularly in a single setup, eliminating secondary operations for intricate parts.

High Production Speed

Rapid cycle times through simultaneous operations (milling and turning) with automatic bar loaders for lights-out manufacturing.

Cost-Effective Consistency

Minimized tool stick-out and vibration offers superior process stability with exceptionally low scrap rates over long production runs.

Materials That Can Be Swiss Machined

Virtually any material that can be machined using a standard lathe or mill can be Swiss machined
