What is Metal 3D Printing?

Metal 3D printing is an additive manufacturing process that builds metal parts by fusing metal powder particles layer by layer. It combines the strength and durability of traditional metals with the design freedom of additive manufacturing, enabling geometries that are impossible to machine or cast.

Unlike CNC machining which removes material from a solid block, metal 3D printing adds material only where needed. This allows for lattice structures, internal channels, topology-optimized designs, and consolidated assemblies that reduce weight while maintaining structural integrity.

Metal 3D printed parts are fully functional with excellent mechanical properties, making them suitable for end-use applications in aerospace, medical, automotive, and industrial sectors.

Advantages of Metal 3D Printing

Why engineers choose additive manufacturing for metal parts.

Complex Geometries

Create lattice structures, internal channels, and topology-optimized designs impossible with traditional machining.

Isotropic Strength

Metal 3D printed parts have uniform, multi-directional mechanical properties throughout the part.

Part Consolidation

Combine multiple assembly components into a single part, reducing weight and eliminating failure points.

Rapid Turnaround

Go from CAD to metal parts in days rather than weeks. No tooling setup or long lead times.

Design Freedom

Organic shapes, undercuts, and features that would require complex multi-axis machining.

Material Efficiency

Additive process uses only the material needed, reducing waste compared to subtractive machining.

Metal 3D Printing Processes

Two technologies optimized for different applications and requirements.

DMLS

Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS)

High-powered laser selectively fuses metal powder layer by layer to create fully dense parts with excellent mechanical properties.

Binder Jet

Metal Binder Jetting

Binding agent is selectively deposited onto metal powder, then sintered or bronze-infiltrated to create cost-effective metal parts.

Key Benefits:

  • Cost-effective at volume
  • Fast turnaround times
  • No support structures needed
  • Complex geometries

Materials:

420 Stainless Steel (Bronze Infiltrated) • 316L Stainless Steel • 17-4 PH Stainless Steel

Best for: Functional prototypes, decorative parts, tooling, cost-sensitive production
